![]() ![]() In areas where heavy tinting is illegal, the car owner would be given a ticket that involves a fine and a promise to remove the tint. The tint to be used must not increase the window’s reflectiveness any glare bouncing off the window could potentially affect other drivers.Īfter-market tinting is readily available and not regulated. A higher degree of tinting is allowable on back side windows and the rear panel window. The side front windows must allow at least 27 percent of visible light into the vehicle. These laws establish that auto companies must ensure that 70 percent of visible light be penetrable through the vehicle’s windshield. Are Tinted Windows Illegal?įederal law regulates tinting on vehicle windows during manufacturing. In many areas, this uncertainty has led to laws making after-market window tinting illegal. This is also a serious issue for law enforcement, who may need to see into a vehicle to determine if there is a threat inside. The same is true for pedestrians and cyclists who must assess whether or not a driver sees them in order to safely proceed. Drivers who cannot see past the tint might not be able to make eye contact. ![]() While the reduction of daytime sun glare seems useful, in low light, tinted windows may be as dangerous as wearing sunglasses at night.ĭanger also exists on the other side of the glass. What are the Dangers of Tinted Windows?Ī vehicle with tinted windows can cause visibility issues for the driver, especially at night. Tinting is also helpful in preventing sun exposure that may lead to skin cancer. Window tinting is said to alleviate eyestrain and tension headaches that may cause driver fatigue. In winter, tinted windows can help with the harsh shine from the accumulation of snow on the roads or in roadside banks. At all times of the year, it can shield a driver from sun glare or light reflecting off driving surfaces. In the summer, tinting can alleviate the heat in a car. For example, tinted windows provide some privacy and alleviate the effects of harsh sunlight. In other cases, the reason behind the decision is more pragmatic. In many cases, the decision to get tinted windows is a matter of personal style. In the wake of a serious accident, tinted windows can become a persuasive factor in determining which driver is deemed liable. The most important of which is that tinted windows have been linked to car accidents. However, there are far more serious issues to consider before adding after-market tinting to a vehicle’s windows. Other motorists have more practical reasons, like reducing glare or eyestrain. Many drivers believe that tinted windows improve the look of their vehicles. Tinted windows are popular for various reasons. ![]()

![]() The pendulum has swung back around toward timing chains more recently, thanks to their longer lifespan. Timing Chains Last Longer, Saving Money in the Long Run Quieter and less expensive than chains, with some able to last as many as 100,000 miles, timing belts eventually became the go-to choice for automakers right up through the 1990s. ![]() Timing Belts Are Quieter and Less Expensive to Manufacture Chains came first, though, before advances in rubber technology made belts possible, and it wasn’t until the mid-1960s when Pontiac brought timing belts to mainstream vehicles. Differences Between Timing Belts and Timing ChainsĪs you might guess, timing belts are closed belts, often made of reinforced rubber, and timing chains are metal chains. From that point on, the cycle continues in the same way.Īdditionally, pulleys and tensioners are crucial to an engine’s timing system, since the parts are designed to keep the belt or chain from slipping and, in some cases, to drive other accessories such as the water pump. Afterward, only the exhaust valves open, so the leftover waste gases can be expelled. The intake valves then close, sealing the cylinders during compression and combustion. During the first step in an engine’s cycle, the intake valves are open so fuel and air can enter the cylinders, while the exhaust valves are closed so that the mixture can’t escape. Engine Valves Let Gas and Air Into the Engine, and Exhaust OutĮngine valves (each motor has at least two per cylinder) play a large role in the engine’s operation. The process follows the same principles as pedaling a bike, with the pedals being the crankshaft and the rear wheel being the camshaft the timing chain or timing belt is the bike chain in this example. The camshaft makes one revolution for every two revolutions of the crankshaft, and as it turns, small oval lobes on the shaft, or cams, push against the valves to open them. Timing belts and timing chains connect the engine’s crankshaft to the camshaft, which opens up the valves of the engine. Timing Chains and Belts Turn the Camshaft and Open the Engine Valves What Do Car Timing Belts and Timing Chains Do? We’ll explore what these car parts do, how they differ, and how much they cost. ![]() However, timing chains and timing belts are made of different materials (metal and rubber, respectively), installed in different ways, and have different maintenance costs (the most important characteristic for car owners). The valves let fuel and air into the engine, and exhaust out. Timing belts and timing chains do the same thing: They connect the engine’s crankshaft to the camshaft, which opens up the valves of the engine. Why It’s Important and How to Tell Which One Your Car Has ![]() ![]() The causes of mesenteric ischemia have been traditionally classified as either occlusive or nonocclusive, based on the underlying pathology. NOMI, first described by Ende in 1958, is one of the diseases that affect the vasculature of the intestine. Thereafter, we recommended decreasing her ultrafiltration volume to less than 2 kg each time in order to avoid episodes of hypotension during or after HD she was treated with intravenous prostaglandin E1 10 μg/day, and the abdominal pain gradually declined after 2 weeks. The patient refused to undergo an endoscopic examination. After her CTA examination, she was treated with subcutaneous low-molecular-weight heparin (fraxiparine 5000 anti-Xa IU/ml, subcutaneously once and twice every other day). A CT angiography (CTA) was then performed, and the result showed that she had a portal vein thrombus with a normal superior mesenteric vein and a mesenteric artery stenosis suspecting NOMI (fig. Her medical condition did not improve in the following days. The patient was initially treated with intravenous antibiotics (rocephin 2.0 g once daily). An enhancement CT showed intestinal dilatation indicating a mesenteric ischemia there was no evidence of a tumor, severe intestinal infection or obstruction. No free air and mass were noticed anywhere in the peritoneal cavity. A plain abdominal film in the erect position disclosed abdominal distention with small fluid levels of the small intestine. The echo examination showed that her left ventricular ejection fraction was 56%. Stool cultures for bacteria, fungus and tubercle bacillus were all negative. The rest of her laboratory examination (including disseminated intravascular coagulation, C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and tumor biomarkers) was within normal limits. Laboratory findings included blood urea 30.9 mmol/l, serum creatinine 749 umol/l, serum amylase 34 IU/l, calcium 2.2 mmol/l, phosphate 2.3 mmol/l, albumin 30 g/l, iPTH 130 pg/ml, hemoglobin 114 g/l, and a white blood cell count of 11.1 × 10 9/l. ![]() A stool examination for occult blood was negative. An abdominal examination revealed that she had decreased bowel sounds with a mild tenderness to deep palpation, especially in the lower right quadrants. On admission, her physical examination showed that her blood pressure was 120/70 mm Hg, a heart rate of 76 beats/min and a body weight of 43 kg she had dry skin and complained of thirst. However, repeated blood tests did not show any abnormal results and an abdominal X-ray ultrasound was also normal. Her abdominal pain began and became more severe after HD (usually in the situation of hypotension). Three months prior to admission, she had several episodes of abdominal pain, each time occurring after HD. In August of 2008, she was admitted to our department because she developed mild, diffuse abdominal pain in combination with nausea and vomiting. She became anuric after maintenance HD for 2 years. The blood pressure was 120/70 mm Hg before HD and dropped to 80/60 mm Hg after HD. ![]() During HD, the occurrence of hypotension was frequent. Her body weight was 46 kg and the ultrafiltration volume was around 2.5–2.7 kg each time. ![]() The procedure of HD was 3 times per week and 4 h each time. Her past medical history included primary hypertension, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, atherosclerosis of the carotids and the abdominal aorta, and chronic congestive heart failure. She commenced maintenance HD in October 2001. We present a 62-year-old female with ESRD due to hypertension. In the absence of noninvasive tools with sufficient sensitivity and specificity, increased awareness and early diagnosis might improve the general understanding of the NOMI incidence and of the characteristics of patients with NOMI. This could be due in part to the increasing number of published cases as well as the increasing survival of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, predisposing them to NOMI. The incidence appears to be increasing steadily during these years. The estimated incidence of mesenteric ischemia in this group is in the range of 0.3–1.9% per patient/year, in contrast to an up to 0.2% value for the general population. The dialysis population, and in particular hemodialysis (HD) patients, are especially prone to develop NOMI. Current knowledge of the epidemiology of NOMI is limited and mainly derived from published cases. Mesenteric ischemia without thromboembolic occlusions of the mesenteric arteries is known as nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI). ![]() ![]() Website – No Website Jack Russell BreederĪddress – Willoughby Forest, 1098 Wild Hill Road, Fairlee, VT 05045, United StatesĪddress – 4079 VT-16, East Hardwick, VT 05836, United States Website – German Shepherd AKC puppies, Vermont Raised German ShepherdsĪddress – 866 W Glover Rd, Irasburg, VT 05845, United States

It's also highly unlikely I'll ever do it unless I get the printer for free and the owner doesn't want it back. I don't have one of these, so I can't repeat the procedure on a printer with a similarly mounted printhead like you have. While my guide covers the cleaning process, it doesn't cover the required disassembly to remove the printhead on permanently installed printers. Maitland’s interest in solitude, however, is somewhat different from that in silence - while private in its origin, it springs from a public-facing concern about the need to address “a serious social and psychological problem around solitude,” a desire to “allay people’s fears and then help them actively enjoy time spent in solitude.” And so she does, posing the central, “slippery” question of this predicament:īeing alone in our present society raises an important question about identity and well-being. Illustration by Alessandro Sanna from ‘The River.’ Click image for more. In my hunt for more silence, I found this valley and built a house here, on the ruins of an old shepherd’s cottage. ![]() Almost to my surprise, I found I loved silence. I began to use my own life as a sort of laboratory to test some ideas and to find out what it felt like. I was interested in silence as a lost cultural phenomenon, as a thing of beauty and as a space that had been explored and used over and over again by different individuals, for different reasons and with wildly differing results. I got fascinated by silence by what happens to the human spirit, to identity and personality when the talking stops, when you press the off button, when you venture out into that enormous emptiness. It was only when she became transfixed by the notion of silence, the subject of her previous book, that she arrived, obliquely, at solitude. ![]() While Maitland lives in a region of Scotland with one of the lowest population densities in Europe, where the nearest supermarket is more than twenty miles away and there is no cell service (pause on that for a moment), she wasn’t always a loner - she grew up in a big, close-knit family as one of six children. That paradox is what British author Sara Maitland explores in How to Be Alone ( public library) - the latest installment in The School of Life’s thoughtful crusade to reclaim the traditional self-help genre in a series of intelligent, non-self-helpy yet immeasurably helpful guides to such aspects of modern living as finding fulfilling work, cultivating a healthier relationship with sex, worrying less about money, and staying sane. It is also a capacity absolutely essential for a full life. Solitude, the kind we elect ourselves, is met with judgement and enslaved by stigma. (It’s worth noting that this unsettling incident, which is as much about the stigma of being single as about the profound failure to honor the art of being alone, is one women are still far more likely to confront than men some live to tell about it.) Photograph by Maria Popova Upon realizing she was to dine alone, the waitstaff escorted her to the back with a blend of puzzlement and pity, so as not to dilute the resort’s carefully engineered illusory landscape of coupled bliss. Hemingway’s famous assertion that solitude is essential for creative work is perhaps so oft-cited precisely because it is so radical and unnerving in its proposition.Ī friend recently relayed an illustrative anecdote: One evening during a short retreat in Mexico by herself, she entered the local restaurant and asked to be seated. And yet that choice is one our culture treats with equal parts apprehension and contempt, particularly in our age of fetishistic connectivity. If the odds of finding one’s soul mate are so dreadfully dismal and the secret of lasting love is largely a matter of concession, is it any wonder that a growing number of people choose to go solo? The choice of solitude, of active aloneness, has relevance not only to romance but to all human bonds - even Emerson, perhaps the most eloquent champion of friendship in the English language, lived a significant portion of his life in active solitude, the very state that enabled him to produce his enduring essays and journals. ![]() |
